1. Bryon and Mark are best friends, and they are foster brothers. Mark's parents had a drunken argument where they shot each other dead, so Mark moved in with Bryon and his mom.
2. The two young people Bryon and Mark meet at the hospital are Mike Chambers and Cathy Carlson, M&M's sister.
3. Bryon has a somewhat honest, friendly, rough, and somewhat trusting relationship with Charlie. They are friends, but Charlie believes that Bryon "lies like a dog." That is why Charlie does not trust Bryon as much as he trusts Mark because he actually tells the truth. Although, Charlie has some respect for Bryon. He took a bullet for him to prove it.
4. At the dance, Angela Shepard got some random guy to pick a fight with Ponyboy Curtis, the person that she went to the dance with, because he was not spending that much time with her. Everything backfired though. The person ended up hitting Mark in the side of his head with a beer bottle, and he was unconscious and had to be taken to the hospital.
5. In his private conversations with Mark, Bryon begins to discover that Mark is retelling all of their childhood stories.
6. Charlie got shot above his left eye in the head by Texans who were hustled at the bar by Bryon and Mark. Also, Bryon feels terrible that Charlie died because he sacrificed his life for him, and because Charlie had a great life ahead of him. On the other hand, Mark is taking the whole thing pretty well saying that that is the way things turn out sometimes.
7. Cathy and Mark don't like each other too much, but they both think one another are beautiful. Although, before their argument they seemed to like each other.
8. Mark cut off Angel's hair while she was passed out drunk, and then he dropped her off in the front yard of her house. Mark did this to Angel because she tried to get back at Ponyboy Curtis, but she almost ended up getting Mark killed, and Mark wanted revenge.
9. Bryon begins to discover that his good friend, Mark just lives his life without any questions, and takes things as they come. That is why he gets into so many problems in life.
10. At Terry Jones' house, Bryon gets beat up by four people, including Tim and Curly Shepard, Angel's two brothers, for cutting off Angel's hair, which actually Mark did. Bryon's attitude changes because he realizes that getting even is not worth it. It just keeps going around in circles he says. So, his attitude becomes more civilized, less violent, and thoughtful.
11. M&M ran away, and now Cathy and Bryon finally locate him at some hippie place. When they found him, M&M looked much different with longer hair, he looked a lot thinner, and he was talking nonsense about spiders. Bryon is moved by all of this because he feels so bad for M&M that he was as much his little brother as Cathy's.
12. Bryon finds a cylinder-like thing under Mark's mattress that has hundreds of pills in them that were LSD drugs Mark was selling. Bryon then calls the cops to come and arrest Mark.
13. Bryon's relationship with his friends and attitude toward life completely changes because he becomes so upset over his life that his relationship with Cathy, Mark, and all of his friends, even his mother, is over, and his attitude toward his own life turns into regret, mystery, and 'what if.'
14. At the end of the book, Bryon feels too mixed up to care about anything anymore, and he also wishes he was a kid again when he used to have all of the answers.
15. I think this is the most emotional and serious book I have ever read. It is also one of the best books I have ever read. The important life message that this book teaches is that when life knocks you down, you just have to find some strength to pick yourself back up and continue on with your life. Also, life can have some tough decisions, but you always have to make the right choice even though your choice may effect you forever. That is what Bryon had to do.
